When logging into the game for the first time, players should be greeted with a number of options of space ports that they can select as their primary residence. For returning players, they should simply see the option to enter the universe if they have already selected this previously. However at times something has happened that may cause the lack of this option. We are still investigating all possible causes for this, but below we have assembled some possible troubleshooting steps to alleviate this issue if its encountered. |
An example of what should be shown to play the game after a residence has already been selected. |

Completely Exit and Restart the Launcher
One of the very basic troubleshooting steps that should be tried, and usually the least involved. The checklist to make sure the you have fully exited the launcher are below:
- Exit and Close Star Citizen if the game client is open.
- Exit the RSI Launcher, either through the menu or by clicking the X in the upper right corner.
- Check the Windows System Tray for any instances of the RSI Launcher.
-
Right-click the launcher icon and select Quit if any are found.
- If there are multiple launcher icons for some reason, repeat this for all of them.
- Open the Windows Task Manager and ensure that no instances of the RSI Launcher are still running.
Once the above has been done, attempt to login and enter the game again to see if the problem is sorted out.
Verify Your Game Files
Bad or corrupted game files can cause all sorts of problems, which include errors and other issues when attempting to download, update, or even play the game. Files can sometimes get corrupted during the patching process and does not usually point to any other specific problem with your computer or the game itself. Most often it can be due to brief connection interruptions during download, old hardware, or a short interruption in the installation process, but this is not an exhaustive list.
To make certain that the problem is not rooted in bad or corrupted files, the best troubleshooting step is to verify the game files are correct.
- Open and login to the RSI Launcher.
- Go to the Settings menu option.
- Select the channel (LIVE, PTU, etc.) of the version of the game giving the errors.
- Ensure the game install location matches where you installed the game.
- Click the VERIFY button.
- Allow the process to finish and re-download/install any needed files.
To avoid any further complications, it's best to allow the file verification process to finish before running any other resource intensive programs or apps on your computer.
Delete the USER Folder
This will generally get rid of any strange corrupted files and other conflicts that may have appeared during patching processes that the Verify function might miss. To do this, delete the entire folder labeled USER located in: (installed drive)\Program Files\Roberts Space Industries\StarCitizen\LIVE
If you are unsure where your game is installed, the install path can be found in the RSI Launcher under the Games section of the Settings menu.
Check Anti-Malware/Anti-Virus Options
One of the probable causes for this issue is an overly restrictive security program, which can interfere with the regular communication between your computer, the game client, and the game servers. Aside from the normal anti-virus and anti-malware programs, this can also include some VPN suites, like NordVPN, which has extra "web protection" options built in. Don't forget to check those as well!
The settings between the various anti-virus and other security and protection programs varies widely, so outlining exact steps for every program is not possible, but in general you should try to do a few things to see if this is causing the trouble:
- Fully exit the game and the RSI Launcher.
- Disable the Web Protection feature in your security app and test the login.
- If you do not wish to totally disable the web protection feature, you will need to whitelist the RSI Website URL (https://robertsspaceindustries.com) and the game's .exe files in your security apps and attempt to login again.
- If the problem is not solved, if you have multiple security programs running, temporarily disable the extra ones and see if it is resolved.
We do not recommend totally disabling all of your security apps! If disabling one security app solves the issue, then you know which one you'll need to fiddle with to allow the game to work through your device security.
Create a settings.json File
Verify a settings.json file exists at the following file location:
\Roberts Space Industries\StarCitizen\LIVE\USER\Client\0\DebugGUI\
If this file does not exist, create one by following these steps:
-
Open the folder location listed above using one of these methods.
- Navigate there manually through Windows Explorer.
- Open Windows Explorer and the drive that Star Citizen is installed on, then copy/paste the above file location string into the location box.
- Right-Click an open space and select New > Text Document from the pop-up option menu.
- Rename the new text document settings.json.
- Open the new settings.json file in Notepad.
- Enter the following and save the file:
{
"style": "eStyleDark",
"alpha": 1.0,
"enabled": 0,
"moduleFeatures": [ ]
}- Restart the RSI Launcher and the game client.
Delete and Reinstall the Launcher and Game
This would be the final step, which is to basically remove everything and start over. Given the size of the game, this will take considerable time and thus trying other troubleshooting steps should be completed first.
We have instructions on how to fully remove all related launcher and game files at this article:
