The VR (Virtual Reality) feature that is currently under experimental testing within Star Citizen allows players to engage with the 'verse in a brand new immersive way! You can find out more details and give feedback about this addition in this thread on Spectrum: Star Citizen VR Support - Experimental Release
But along with all new systems, especially experimental ones, there are some growing pains. One issue that our teams have already identified and are working on sorting out is with SteamVR. In some cases the system for this can sometimes automatically activate SteamVR and some related headsets upon starting the game. This is fine if a player was intending to use the feature but otherwise may be unwanted behavior. Steps to stop this are below.
Workaround for Preventing Automatic SteamVR Startup
First, try disabling VR mode
- Exit Star Citizen if the game is running.
- Open the RSI Launcher.
- Click on the gear icon next to the Game Environment selector.
- Select Disable VR mode from the pop-up menu.
If that does not help, follow these steps:
- Exit the game and the RSI Launcher.
- Navigate to your game install folder.
- The default install pathway will be: (install drive)Program Files\Roberts Space Industries\StarCitizen\LIVE
- Check for a file named user.cfg.
- If there is not a file with this name here, create a new text document and name it user.cfg.
- Open the user.cfg file with any text editor.
- Add a new line: sys.openxr=0
- Save the file.
- Re-open the RSI Launcher and enter the game again.
This should prevent the auto-initialization. If you run into any further issues or simply have feedback, please head to the Spectrum post going over the feature here.
